Speaking Impairment and the Disability Tax Credit

The DTC supports individuals who have difficulty speaking so as to be understood by someone familiar to them due to a medical condition.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • You can't talk in a way that a friend can understand you in a quiet place, or it takes you three times longer to talk than someone else your age, even if you use special help like therapy or medicine

  • Condition must be prolonged and affect daily communication

  • Your impairment has lasted or is expected to last for a continuous period of at least 12 months

Common Qualifying Conditions:

  • Speech impediments (e.g., severe stuttering)

  • Aphasia due to stroke or brain injury

  • Vocal cord paralysis

  • ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis)

Medical Certification:

Must be certified by a medical doctor, nurse practitioner or speech-language pathologist
