Hearing Impairment and the Disability Tax Credit

The DTC recognizes conditions causing a person to be unable to hear so as to understand a person familiar with them in a quiet setting. 

Eligibility Criteria:

  • You can't hear well enough to understand a friend talking in a quiet place, or it takes you three times longer to understand than someone your age, even if you use special help like therapy or medication

  • Dependence on visual cues or assistive devices

  • Your condition affects you almost all the time, about 90% or more

  • Your impairment has lasted or is expected to last for a continuous period of at least 12 months

  • Common Qualifying Conditions:

  • Profound or severe hearing loss

  • Tinnitus causing communication barriers 

  • Deafness 

  • Ménière’s disease 

  • Occupational noise exposure

  • Medical Certification:

    Must be certified by a medical doctor, nurse practitioner, or an audiologist
